Does Complexity Beat Simplicity? The Honest Benchmark Test

Every active strategy has to beat a simple alternative to justify itself.

Backtest AuditSystematic InvestingQQQ Research

If a strategy is more complex than buying QQQ or a leveraged QQQ ETF, does that complexity earn its keep?

The benchmarks every QQQ options strategy should face

  • Buy-and-hold QQQ: whether the strategy adds value over plain market exposure.
  • A 2x leveraged QQQ ETF: whether the options structure beats simple packaged leverage.
  • Static LEAPS with no model: whether ML timing adds value.
  • Rules-based PMCC with no model: whether the regime-adjusted overlay adds value.
  • QQQ plus cash at matched risk: whether excess return is just extra risk.

What "better" means

For an advanced investor, higher CAGR alone is not enough. A strategy is better only if it improves results after costs on one or more of these: return per unit of drawdown, recovery time, worst rolling period, or consistency across different regimes.

TradeMind's research result, in context

TradeMind's two year simulation, October 14, 2024 to October 13, 2026, showed QQQ LEAPS at +229.48% with a largest decline of 14.59%, against QQQ buy and hold at +49.46% with a largest decline of 22.88%. That result is hypothetical, model-priced, and sensitive to option pricing, slippage, assignment, costs and model choices. Its credibility depends on how it does against the benchmarks above, and against forward paper or live results over time. TradeMind publishes those comparisons on its validation page so you can judge for yourself.

The checklist from this series

Before adopting any "higher return" strategy, confirm:

  • No Martingale behavior or automatic averaging down (Issue 9)
  • Returns broken down by source (Issue 10)
  • An explicit delta budget (Issue 11)
  • Disciplined contract selection (Issue 12)
  • Rally rules for the overlay (Issue 13)
  • An out-of-sample model (Issue 14)
  • Portfolio-level stress testing (Issue 15)
  • Honest benchmarks (Issue 16)
